Ten sports wins,Chennaites lose
Today the supreme court of India passed a judgement in the case(between TEN sports & DD) involving telecast rights for the upcoming Indo-Pak cricket series. The court has decided that all DD would get to telecast is a measly 90 mins highlights pckage.I know that this judgement is of little significance tothe ppl in the other metros in India, but here in chennai, the situation is a bit different.
As u may already be knowing,Chennai is one of the(if not the only)cities in which the government has implemented the Conditional Access System(CAS).The system is actually forward looking as it seeks to end the monopoly a few cable operators enjoy. But my only question is-"Why has chennai alone been singled out?".It has been 2 years since this system came into effect and it is a well known fact that this hasnt been imposed anywhere else.So the question arises-Why Chennai??
The answer lies in the fact that most of the city's satellite operators come under one Main Satellite Operator, which is in turn owned by one of Tamil Nadu's political dynasties. This MSO had bought Set Top Boxes(STBs,which are required for receiving pay per view channels under CAS) in bulk, when CAS was imposed on them by the Govt(headed by their rival party). And now that this group is in power at the Centre, the end to this farce called CAS looks nowhere near sight.
And what about the Chennaite??Why does he have to pay in this political game??Well all he can do is to hope...Hope that in the long run this mess is sorted out ...And that for the time being,he atleast getsto see the ODIs live atleast!!
